Hello, I'm Dr. Ramya Narayanan from Strong Roots Dental. I have my colleague Dr. Saloni Trivedi here with me today, so we are going to talk about dental implants and answer some of the most commonly asked questions you guys might have.

What conditions might disqualify a person from getting dental implants?

That's a very detailed question. There are a few medical conditions that can, I wouldn't necessarily say disqualify, but probably not allow that person to get dental implants then. It could be uncontrolled diabetes, periodontal diseases, or if a patient is a chronic chain smoker. These are all things that can affect the health of the bone and the health of the tissues, which can cause failure of dental implants. Those are conditions where, you know, that's something to be discussed with your dentist, who will advise you to either get some kind of help and get the conditions under control before we talk about placing them. Right, and your doctor can help us with that too.

What are the benefits and risks of dental implants?

That's a good question. We got into this a little bit, but essentially the benefits are that you're not leaving a space open and you're not having that open to things like, as I said, bad shifting of teeth into positions that we don't want them to, or just lack of teeth meaning less efficiency in chewing or not an aesthetic thing. The benefits there are having that part in your body that your body accepts as a natural tooth and restoring your function. Risk-wise, studies show that 90 to 95% of dental implants last 10 years or more, so we're not talking a very big risk. Of course, at the end of the day, it's always possible, but that's why we are always big advocates of making sure the home care is ideal, making sure people are coming every six months so that the risks are lowered. And of course, there always can be some amount of rejection that can happen right after placing the implant, so that's why you must come back to your dental office within the first six months of placing your dental implant. That way, x-rays or whatever needs to be taken will be taken, and if something feels not right, it can easily be corrected.

How will a dentist decide if dental implants are right for me?

You will first go in for a consultation, and assuming you're missing a tooth, the dentist will go ahead and get some x-rays taken, get some CBCT taken just to make sure the height of the bone, the width of the bone, the density of the bone is correct, and whether you would be a good candidate for the implant.

What are the steps to getting dental implants?

Like we said, the first step is that consult, making sure that you are a candidate, you have the right amount of bone, or if we have to do something to get the right amount of bone, then we will schedule you with our surgeon to get that actual implant placed. That appointment kind of depends on how many, where, things like that. If we're talking one or two implants, three to four months later, we'll let that body heal the implant and accept it as its own, and then put that crown over it.

In that three to four month period, is there going to be any pain involved for the patient?

Usually just a day or two after the implant there could be some soreness because it is a surgery at the end of the day. Afterwards, once that two to three days goes by, no, you probably won't even know it's there. And then three months later, like we said, we expose it again and just pop that crown on top. So generally, one of the questions my patients ask me is, you said the healing period for an implant is three to four months, what it actually means is it's not that you're going to be in pain, it just means that it takes that long for the implant to integrate with the rest of the bone, and that process takes about three to four months. As far as pain is concerned, like Dr. Tredi said, you're probably going to have a little bit of soreness the day of and the next day, but nothing after that makes sense.

How long does the dental implant procedure last?

Again, it depends on the kind of procedure. If you're getting a single tooth replaced with a dental implant, or if you're getting multiple implants placed, or if you're going in for a full mouth reconstruction or full arch dental implants, but typically, for an ideal scenario where the patient is missing the tooth and the bone height is good, the bone support is good, the density is good, I would probably say about 45 minutes to get one single dental implant placed.

Is the dental implant procedure painful?

That's a good question. In my opinion, the only thing that might be just a little bit painful is getting numb, you know, that light tiny pinch of the needle. Once that kicks in, you should not be feeling the rest of the appointment. It might be a little pressure, a little water, but nothing painful. And then, like we kind of talked about before, the two to three days after could be a little sore, but the actual pain should not be there, especially because we give you certain medications to kind of control that. So, my patients ask if they can go back to work the next day. Can you? Absolutely, in all honesty, it depends on the kind of work that's being done. So I tell my patients, listen, if you want to go back to work, you absolutely can, but if you work involves talking in front of a crowd or addressing a crowd, maybe not.

Will dental implants last for the rest of my life?

It depends on what age I catch you. Generally, studies show dental implants last anywhere between 20 to 30 years. It depends on a lot of factors, but can it last for the rest of our lives? It can, it may not.

What are the costs and financing options available with dental implants?

So generally, in the state of New Jersey, we've seen that the average cost of an implant is anywhere from five to seven thousand, obviously not counting what your insurance could help you with. In terms of financing options, there are many, and that's something that we can help you with when you come in. We can apply for them.

Do most insurance plans cover the cost of dental implants?

It depends on the dental plan that you choose, but from what I have seen, yes, most dental insurances do cover a portion of the dental implant. Again, the best person to ask would be, you know, go to the dental office and ask the insurance coordinator. I'm sure they'll be happy to help you.

Enjoy a Beautiful Smile & Strong Bite With Teeth Implants

Implants are one of the marvels of modern tooth restoration. Teeth implants act as artificial teeth roots, anchoring several types of replacement teeth that create gorgeous smiles and restore virtually all your chewing capacity.

Unlike some dental offices, at Strong Roots Dental we both place and restore teeth implants, meaning you can get your entire implant procedure completed in one place. You won’t have to worry about going to more than one office for different phases of your treatment. To make your care even more precise and efficient, we use a 3-D cone beam CT scanner to plan your treatment. You can feel comfortable knowing your smile is in good hands.

Our dentists can use implants in a variety of ways to give you back your teeth. Below are some of our most popular treatments:

  • Single Implant-Crown Combination – For a single missing tooth, we’ll place one implant and cap it with a lifelike crown to fill in the gap in your smile.
  • Implant-Supported Bridge – An implant bridge will repair gaps in your smile left by one or more missing teeth.
  • Implant-Retained Dentures – Your new dentures will stay fixed in place thanks to a system of snaps and balls that anchors them to dental implants.
  • Implant-Supported Dentures – Our most comfortable denture uses a sturdy metal bar that screws to dental implants to give a stable and reliable fit.
  • All-on-4® Implants – With just four teeth implants per arch, we can secure a full row of beautiful and functional new teeth. Plus, you won’t have to remove them for daily cleaning.
  • Full-Mouth Reconstruction – Your dentist will work with you to develop a comprehensive plan for restoring all your teeth.
  • Same-Day Smile – Using precise planning and an innovative procedure, you can get your implants and new teeth all in the same appointment.

We can also prepare your mouth for implants if you aren’t a candidate initially. For example, a bone grafting procedure will add bone to your jaw to give your implants the structure they need for successful placement. We can also make room in your upper jaw with a sinus lift procedure. Your dentist will discuss what’s necessary before beginning treatment.

While it may take time for the process to be complete, it’ll all be worth it when you sit down to enjoy your favorite chewy or crunchy foods. Don’t wait another day to enjoy the benefits of dental implants in Hoboken. Call our Jersey City office at (551) 553-4277 or our Hoboken office at (551) 288-0255 for an appointment.
